The X-Files #1.16: Young At Heart

Some of these “monster” episodes are starting to feel kind of cliched. They’re hardly extremely original. This one, though, had a little twist of government conspiracy tossed in very briefly which made it feel like it was part of The X-Files. The oddest part though–besides the man who had his aging process reversed and had a salamander hand where his human hand was amputated–was that Mulder was all emotional in this episode.

Mulder’s first case ended badly, when a killer held a hostage, and Mulder had the opportunity to shoot him. But he didn’t, so the killer ended up killing another agent. Mulder, at the trial, snapped and yelled at the guy how he has to die like animal. Then apparently he’d been haunted by the whole thing, following the dead agent’s family closely. The killer threatens Mulder and swears he’ll get even. Then, out of nowhere, the killer–presumed dead–is said to have been revived with an anti-aging process and is getting younger! I didn’t see that coming at all.

Anyway, the conspiracy part was that the government knew he was alive and wanted to buy the info about anti-aging from him. This could change all mankind! That this monster story ever so briefly crossed into government knowledge/conspiracy feels like a landmark moment in X-Files-ness. Deep Throat tells Mulder to consider this, and he says he will, but in the end he shoots the guy and the info gets hidden again. Mankind stays the same!
