The X-Files #1.14: Gender Bender
This one was a trip! Mulder, showing no effects of having been shot in the last episode (typical–this first season is mostly just a series of monster movies), happens on a series of murders. The killer appears to be both a man and a woman, and Mulder follows the evidence to an Amish-like community in Massachusetts. It was pretty interesting to watch, but really there were very few answers. How did the switch genders? The Cult People seemed to have some sort of power of seduction which was never explained. Also, Mulder found them under their barn, in some weird gooey slop, performing a ceremony of some sort. And when they find the killer, the other Cult People show up out of nowhere and take him away. Mystery is good, but this was just unexplained occurrences, and it felt random.
Of course, the ending tried to explain it. As Mulder & Scully go back and investigate the cult, they find the caverns under the barn all jammed up. Another agent tells them he found something out in the field… and it’s a CROP CIRCLE! End of story. Kinda neat, didn’t see that coming, but it felt a little random. I liked the story and watching, but in the end, I think it was unsatisfying.
