The X-Files #1.13: Beyond The Sea

I was just reading, and according to Wiki, this episode is one of the favorites of both Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson. I can see that–it’s really tense, creepy, and is the first to really focus on Scully. However, I think it was a somewhat standard storyline. And that if they wanted to focus on Scully, thats awesome, but basically they had to turn her character into Mulder to be able to show more of her character? Bollocks.

Pretty much, the story started with Scully’s father dying, shortly after she had a dream/vision of him. Then, this serial killer guy that Mulder is working on, he claims to communicate with the dead and wants to help Mulder solve a case (he claims to have psychic ability). Thus, Scully becomes the person who believes in the psychic stuff, while Mulder the whole time is skeptical (until the end, when he conveniently gets shot so Scully has to do everything).

Relationship note: it appears this was the first time Mulder called Scully by her first name (when he first saw her after her father’s funeral).

Anyway, to sum, Scully episode = AWESOME IDEA. Making Scully act like Mulder in that episode = FAIL.
