The X-Files #1.7: Ghost In The Machine
Ha, just as I note how the show is dated, they throw an episode about artificial intellegence and a murderous operating system! The show was kind of enjoyable–but it was a weird mix between an X-File and Scooby Doo. Really, it wasn’t an X-File, though it treated the operating system as a ghost (like the title). Mulder was on the case to help his old partner, who was incompetent and a jerk (but Mulder still referred to him as a “friend”). Mulder’s not supposed to have friends, dang it!
There were odd moments like a guy typing something like “What are you doing, computer?!” on a screen in order to communicate with the machine. Even in 1993, I think they knew enough about computer networks to know they don’t communicate in English like that. The show was sort of hinting at the internet (hacking through phone lines, etc.), but didn’t quite mention it–I think this was literally just around when the web began to go popular.
Then in the end, some guy just pulls a gun on Mulder, and Scully appears out of nowhere (actually the ceiling ducts) just in time to save him. Also, this guy with the gun is shown using a cellphone–and it is a gigantic Zack Morris one! Awesome!
In the end, Mulder puts a floppy disk in the computer with a virus to destroy the system. This is implied by screen fulls of random letters. But, in real X-File style, as the computer was being destroyed, some lights blink on again. It survives! Just like every X-Files monster–they’re still out there, even when destroyed!
