Lost #2.15: Maternity Leave
This episode was especially creepy, because the flashbacks weren’t just interwoven with the story, they were actually part of the story. And because the flashbacks weren’t to way back, pre-crash, but were Claire’s flashbacks to when she had been kidnapped. And because the flashbacks were creepy.
Claire realized via flashback that when she was kidnapped, by Ethan, she was taken to another hatch and kept in a nursery/hospital-type room. The doctor people were planning to take her baby from her. What’s creepier than stealing babies from their mothers? Nothing, nothing at all.
I’m not clear on the timing here, since Claire’s kidnapping was way back in season one. How long ago was that in island time? Not all that long, right? If so, how did the entire Second Hatch get cleared out like that? It looked like it had been abandoned years ago. Either way, it was creepy–Ethan was seemingly drugging Claire, and acting all nice to get Claire to give up the child.
Claire also realized that Rousseau had helped her. Rousseau had had her baby taken–like they were going to do to Claire. But Claire had seen her daughter in the Second Hatch, and the daughter had helped Claire get away. So that was a nice twist there.
I was not clear why they wanted the babies down there in that other hatch. Something to do with a vaccine. Also, am I right on this? That Ethan was talking to a guy in a hallway, and was that guy the same guy who confronted Jack and Locke and told them they were intruding on his island? And that he was being nice letting them stay? He didn’t have the big beard in the flashback though. Or is that why Kate found that fake beard in the Second Hatch? Hmmm yes I think that must be right.
Meanwhile the Jack/Locke bit takes an interesting turn. Locke lends the balloonist guy a Dostoevsky book–intriguing choice! Especially in what I was noticing the last few episodes with Sayid and Sawyer defining themselves by what they do. Maybe I’ll think and write on that some more. Anyway, Locke said something about how Hemingway felt he was in Dostoevsky’s shadow. The balloonist guy heard this, and later asked Locke what it was like to live in Jack’s shadow. OH BURN!! The balloonist might be more evil and sharper than anyone expects. Locke said he wasn’t in a shadow, that they make decisions together. But immediately went back to the hatch and tossed all the dishes on the floor. Clearly that got under his skin…
I must add finally, I think this was one of my favorite episodes yet, for sure.
