Lost #2.14: One Of Them

Finally a Sayid episode! He’s been pretty much not in the show for awhile. And he’s bad-ass again!

Sayid tortures a guy who the Crazy French Lady caught in a trap. The episode kept flip-flopping on who the guy was. First, Crazy French Lady was like “he’s one of them!” Sayid didn’t believe her, and let him go. She shot him with an arrow. Then Sayid takes him back to The Hatch. The guy says he’s a balloonist, who was floating across the Pacific, but crashed. Sayid decides to torture him anyway, I guess he doesn’t believe him. Questioning and threatening him doesn’t turn up any new info, he seems like a harmless balloonist. Sayid breaks down over Shannon in the torture room (!). Then he beats the balloonist senseless, who himself never really breaks down. The last shot of balloonist on the ground after Jack stops Sayid made it look like the balloonist was evil and got away with something. The episode ends with Sayid telling Charlie that he’s sure the balloonist is an Other, and feels no guilt about torturing him. I don’t know what to believe. Really, no idea whatsoever. Trust Sayid’s instincts? Or was he over-the-top and acting out on someone over Shannon’s death, and beating a balloonist?

At one point during the interrogation, the balloonist asks Sayid who he is. His answer is he’s a “torturer.” Last episode, Sawyer said the same thing: he’s a conman, and conning is what he does (as he pointed out to Kate that she runs away). It’s all fate–they can’t escape themselves, even on a distant island in the middle of nowhere. Even in this episode, Hurley was caught by Sawyer eating from a secret food pile. More FATE–just like Charlie’s fingers say. I reckon that if there is a greater point to the story of Lost it is along these lines: what is fated?
