Vradio #20: Theme Time Rip-Off Hour #2: Mothers

Bob Dylan’s second Theme Time Radio Hour was on the theme “Mothers” (it aired the week of Mother’s Day). Listening to it, and trying to find songs on my own for Rip-Off Hour, I could not help but notice that, though heartfelt, most songs about mothers are pretty cornball. I did my best to find ones that weren’t, but was not entirely successful there.

1. Wesley Willis “My Mother Smokes Crack Rocks”
2. The Skygreen Leopards “Mother, The Sun Makes Me Cry”
3. Talib Kweli “Momma Can You Hear Me”
4. Elvis Presley “Mama Liked The Roses”
5. The Beatles “Let It Be”
6. Kate Bush “Mother Stands For Comfort”
7. U2 “Mothers Of The Disappeared”
8. Devo “Gut Feeling / Slap Your Mammy”
9. The Decemberists “My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist”
10. Elliott Smith “Wouldn’t Mama Be Proud?”
11. Nina Simone “Blues For Mama”
12. Ghostface Killah “Momma”
13. Stephen Malkmus “Mama”
14. Dr. John “Mama Roux”
15. PJ Harvey “I Think I’m A Mother”
16. Smog “I Feel Like The Mother Of The World”
17. Bob Dylan “Tell Me, Momma (live)”

And here is Dylan’s playlist.
