Angel #1.16: The Ring

“The Ring” was an interesting episode, in it seemed to be a metaphor for quite a few things all at once. Metaphorical stories are the norm in the Buffyverse, but it seemed like this had a lot. Basically Angel got captured by some guy, who ran an underground demon fighting ring, keeping captured demons as his slaves. Angel tried to band all the enslaved demons together so they could break free, which was a twist: usually he saves humans from demons, not vice versa. The situation seemed to be an allusion to prison, slavery, even some schoolyard bullying. At some point some lady buys Angel’s freedom, as long as he forgets what he knows. He can’t do that, so he goes back in. Then Wesley (acting way more competently than the first 3 episodes he’s been on portrayed him) and Cordelia find their way in and the demons end up being set free. The writers of course know exactly what’s going on here, and the last scene was the 3 characters realizing they just set a bunch of demons free.
