This was a long episode of non-happenings, until the end when a couple of things cliffhangeredly happened.

Basically, somehow, the group realized that the Mysterious New Guy Ethan had taken Merry Brandybuck and Pregnant Claire.  So they go on the trail, running through the island, trying to find them.  I liked how Jack was always really impulsive in his decision-making, compared with Locke’s studied patience.  Jack’s like “WE GOTTA FOLLOW THIS TRAIL” and then bursts off in a run.  Locke’s looking around for clues, figuring out where to go.

But as I said, not much really happened.  They followed their trails.  Then at the end, Jack and Kate discovered Merry Brandybuck–but hanging from a tree, apparently dead!  :(  :(  :(  But Jack pounds on Merry’s chest for awhile, and after some dramatic pauses, he’s alive again!  I do not know much about the medical sciences, nor mystical islands, so I am not sure which is why he is alive.

Then Locke and Boone (the other search party) happened upon a steel box or something in the ground, and pounded it a little bit.  (It did not come to life like Merry did.)

That was it!  The whole episode.  (Jack’s flashbacks to an incident with his father also killed some time.)  The little synopsis in the DVD notes says the steel discovery will “change the lives of everyone on the island.”  That sounds promising, and I hope it is literal!  They all become different people!
