Angel #1.1: City Of
I am finally watching Angel. I watched all of Buffy, from day one, but never took to following Angel closely when it was on. Dunno why really, but I am now in a goal to catch up with the entire Buffy canon.
“City Of” is the first episode, and therefore used to set-up the premise of the show. Which is, Angel = superhero. It appears that he will be saving people. He lurks on roofs and has gadgets and a convertible and is otherwise just like Batman. I assume Joss realized this, because there is a Batcave joke like 5 minutes in. Buffy was a superhero too, but hers never really felt like a superhero show; this was a much more traditonal in its superheroness.
Plot-wise, first Angel saves some blonde girls from Sawyer on Lost. Then there is some recap of Angel’s story (bizarrely told to Angel by Doyle, for no real reason except to explain to the audience; and how does Doyle know all that anyway? Angel wasn’t even curious). Then Angel tries to save a blonde girl, after being really nosy and her telling him everything about herself. Angel should try to save girls who look like Buffy in every episode! He fails though, which is of course Joss’ style. But then he ends up finding Cordelia in LA and saving her. And then Angel crank calls Buffy, which is also Joss’ style. Pretty simple plot really, just introducing some characters and some motives.
Halfway through Angel tells Doyle he’s not interested in sharing his feelings or opening up. It remains to be seen (by me) if that is a good characteristic for a lead character of a television show.
