Lost #1.8: Confidence Man
This episode was mostly about Sawyer. His flashback story about what happened to his family was quite dramatic, and would make a good movie itself. I liked it, and it was interesting how he became who he was hunting. It still does not explain why he is in ass on the island though; maybe that will come up later? I was not really expecting Jack and Sayid to torture Sawyer either… what is this, 24? Anyway whatever. It was dramatic. The tiny second story about Shannen having asthma, and Sun helping cure her happened. For some reason, Sun told Michael where the eucalyptus was, and not her husband; clearly, that will have some sort of repercussion, yea? Also, it seems they have already decided to forget that Sayid was knocked out with a stick, as he has taken off, leaving the group, to map the island. So the most intriguing cliffhanger question yet goes unanswered? I hope they don’t leave it, I want answers.
Eight episodes in, and generally I am more interested in character back stories than anything else, I think. It is going okay, but I am not terribly enthralled in it (yet?). I would probably be more interested in the main story lines about being on the island, if I could figure out whether it is magic island X-Files-style sci-fi or some sort of survivalist tale. Somewhere in between, I imagine? Also, I cannot tell how fast the story is going. Last episode, Merry Brandybuck* was in heroin detox; this episode, completely fine! Stuff like that is throwing any sense of time with the story off, and confusing me. Either I am too focused on details, or I just have not watched enough yet. Anyway I am trying to hold off full judgment until, as I said last paragraph, the story gives me some answers.
*I’ve learned all the names now, but I’d still rather call Charlie by his Lord Of The Rings name.
