The X-Files #1.21: Tooms
“Tooms” is part 2 of “Squeeze,” the third episode of the series. That episode tracked a mutant man who could squeeze into tight spaces, and killed 5 people every 30 years to eat their livers. It was a great first “monster” episode. Part 2 was also quite interesting, and pretty well-written. Investigation-wise, it relied on a couple of “hunches” which is lame story-telling. But it definitely did not fall into the conventional monster plot that they’d been telling the last bunch of episodes.
More importantly, the episode began with Scully talking to Skinner in his office. It was the first appearence of Skinner, who at this point is just a hard-nosed boss, trying to make sure Scully uses more conventional investigating. She argues for Mulder’s unconvention. Also hanging out in Skinner’s episode is Cigarette Smoking Man–previously seen hanging out with Deep Throat. He does not say much (only one line, that he believes Scully and Mulder’s crazy theory). Basically, he just smokes cigarettes–they show him lighting up like 3 times. It is hinted at that he is somewhat in charge of Skinner. Mulder comments that they want to shut The X-Files down, and that he has a hunch that things will change.
