Lost Episode #1.1: Pilot Part 1

I am watching all of Lost. And in the spirit of my friend Dave, who is reviewing every Spiderman comic, I will do the same with Lost, here.

First, I should explain - the show began in the beginning of my second year of law school, and I recall watching the first few episodes. But I consciously decided not to get involved; I was busy, it seemed too X-Files-y, and I didn’t feel like getting involved with it then.

So, I know nothing about the show, beyond what I saw back then, and the occasional this or that which I have overheard people talk about. I do not know what the story is, if it is good, if it suddenly becomes a comedy, jumps the shark, or anything. Keep that in mind, please. (Also, this might take me a really really long time to finish.)

Episode 1 was the first half of the pilot, and it was amazing how much of it seemed familiar. It all came back to me from when it aired, back in September, 2004. Even when I’ve rewatched Buffy and other shows I’ve been into, they don’t feel this familiar. Maybe because it was just 3.5 years ago, or maybe because it was really effective as a pilot.

The good stuff was that it introduced a lot of characters, and handled it all pretty well, showing us their personalities quickly and effectively (like Big Guy giving an extra plate of food to Pregnant Lady, Lifeguard Guy finding a bunch of pens for Jack to use, Asian Guy telling his wife to stick with him and not worry about anyone else). I do like shows and stories with a lot of characters, and always have (from SuperFriends to Muppets to The Wire).

I don’t know if there’s any stuff I wasn’t into really, but I think if they just continually look into the forest, freaked about an unshown presence, it will start to bug me. Also since the story started after the plane crashed, nothing really seemed to happen in this episode. The whole thing can be summed up as: Jack ran around fixing people, then they go find the cockpit and run away from something scary.
