The X-Files #1.5: The Jersey Devil

Chris Carter writes his first non-mythology episode of the series, and it’s not that good really. The monster story never really clicked. Mulder and Scully go to Atlantic City to investigate what appears to be similar to the famous myth of the Jersey Devil. They track some beast-woman who keeps coming out of the forest. I was never really sure how they kept ending up in the same place as the beast-woman, or why they were running through some old warehouse. Or even how Mulder figured it might be a woman beast. Also, the connection between the Jersey Devil story and the beast-woman was not expressed very well, beyond something eating humans in a forest. There was a lot of just telling us things, instead of showing it.

Anyway, the good part–since Chris Carter was the writer and all–was about Scully and Mulder’s relationship. The last few episodes had shown and hinted at Mulder and his motivation over figuring out his sister’s disappearence. This one didn’t mention any mythology/aliens/government conspiracy at all, but it did show Mulder being obsessed with work (except when Scully walked in and he was looking at a girlie mag). His obsession with the case was contrasted with Scully going back and forth to DC to visit her godson as well as to go on a date. The mother of her godson set her up with a man, after asking her why she doesn’t go out with Mulder. (Her answer is he’s a jerk, then immediately takes that back and says he’s too obsessed with work.) There was also some subtle talk about Scully having kids (her date had a son, and she expressed wonder to her friend about being a parent). I know this is all relevant to later on in the series, and liked how it was brought up here initially.
