Lost #3.7: Not In Portland
Not In Portland! This episode seems to have a ton of things to think about, more than usual lately, and so I do not know where to begin thinking about them.
The flashback was for Juliet, who was some genius fertility doctor, being recruited by some shady medical research group–who I can only assume from the hints is how she ended up on Island #2, and who The Others are. Or say they are. Maybe they were some group of someone, and they needed a fertility expert for some reason (similar reason as to why they steal babies?), so that’s how they got one. Hmm… maybe they had similar control behind the plane crash, since Ben needed a surgeon? Nahh that’s too crazy–Desmond’s failure to enter in the numbers was by accident, and that would be impossible.
Anyway, Jack still has Ben’s life held hostage on the O.R. table. With the power he gets Kate and Sawyer sent free, who help Alex rescue Carl from some weird Clockwork Orange-y brainwashing room. Jack tells them to not ever come back for him. Juliet still wants Ben dead, but Ben somehow becomes alert, and promises Juliet she will be sent home if she helps Jack save him. So she does. So it looks like Juliet and Jack are being sent home! Still not clear why or how Ben has such power over everyone. Couldn’t she have just let him die, and then gone home?
Lots of other interesting tidbits: Alex is apparently Ben’s daughter. I imagine this is just by name, because Ben stole Alex from French Lady when she was a baby. The movie screen Carl was forced to watch had a bunch of platitudes on it (”nothing changes”), and one of them mentioned Jacob (”God loves you as he loved Jacob” according to Wiki). Last episode, one of The Others’ henchmen mentioned how Jack wasn’t even on Jacob’s list. So who is Jacob? Also I was confused, Island #1, they said was like two miles away… that’s not really that far, couldn’t Kate and Sawyer have swam that, if push came to shove (which clearly it had)? Why did they insist on getting a boat?
