This was an intriguing episode, based around UFOs and government conspiracies. In other words, cornerstones of The X-Files style. It wasn’t as creepy as the pilot was, but it was fairly interesting. Mulder finds a case in Idaho of a man reported kidnapped, which “smells like the paranormal.” He gets warned by a mysterious man not to follow it. He and Scully go out there, and find a military base with the help of Oz from Buffy/Scott Evil. Going out on the base, Mulder sees a mysterious aircraft fly low overhead, and then the military catches him and erases his memory of it.

The Mulder Explanation is that the government is flying aircraft they built based on UFO technology. The man who warned Mulder shows up again at the end to tell Mulder what he saw, and to offer himself as an informant (the Deep Throat of the title). Mulder found the truth in episode 2! But it was immediately taken away from him…
