Lost #2.1: Man Of Science, Man Of Faith

Season 2 opened with shots of a shirtless guy waking up, exercising and playing music on a record player, but never seeing his face. At first, I was like, did I click on the right show title on ABC’s website? But then I realized he was in the Underground Hatch! Maybe it’s the Devil! And then suddenly, he was jarred by an explosion, and the camera went flying up to show Locke and Kate staring down the Ladder Into The Ground! Exciting, that was.

Meanwhile above ground, not much was going on. Shannon lost Walt’s dog, which I thought was symbolic to Walt being kidnapped by Child Thieving Pirates, but then she found it. Though, she also saw Walt in some sort of dream apparition! He was whispering, and all wet. It probably didn’t mean anything.

Then in Jack’s flashback… he tried to save Pretty Lady after she broke her back after she ran someone over. He failed, and was upset and got advice from Weird Australian Guy. And then miracle! She was OK!

Back on the island, Jack was telling people not to go into the Hatch, and then he impulsively (still my favorite Jack trait) changed his mind. Kate and Locke had already gone down, so he went after them, and they were gone! This wasn’t as dramatic as they intended, since… really now, what’s so scary about Guy Doing His Laundry And Making Smoothies?

But then when Jack went down there, it was all dank and old and clearly there had been no Jazzercize for awhile. This was creepy part, because Kate and Locke were nowhere, and Jack triggered the bad 80s music and it was all tense.

Then Locke showed up at gunpoint, and turns out the Weird Australian Guy was the one with the gun, who had been quarantined in the hatch for so long! That’s some topnotch Lost-style Serendipity!
