Twin Peaks #1.2: Traces To Nowhere
What hit me about this, the first real “episode” of the show, was how many characters are involved. And most of those characters got one scene, maybe two. But it was enough. Clearly this series is going to be one in which the stories fit together. For instance, Pretty Waitress: early in this episode, she had a scene where her scary ponytailed greasy husband forced her to do his laundry. Then later, they show him angry and abusing her. It went like this the whole way, as Agent Cooper and Sheriff Truman investigate.
So I guess–what have they found about Laura’s death after one episode (and the pilot)? The townspeople, who as I noted were all immediately extremely affected by her death, continue. Everyone is taken with the wonderousness of Laura Palmer. She tutored Packard in English, set up a Meals On Wheels program, the local doctor broke down over how beautiful she was and could not bring himself to do an autopsy. But then, there’s her dark side — cocaine, basically, and all these men in her life (two boyfriends who are all mysterious, and a psychiatrist who appears to be obsessed with her). None of this has led me to any actual feeling about who killed her… in fact my current instinct is that it was a random killing, or at least someone we have not met yet. But I imagine that to be an incorrect instinct.
